Prometheus didn’t agree to let him come, but he didn’t leave either. All day long, Julian’s arms were wrapped tight around him, and Prometheus didn’t have the strength to escape them. He let the hours slip past, the tick of seconds making the choice for him to let Julian put himself at risk. Again. Prometheus was hardly the first selfish god, but he had to feel the lousiest about it.

When the sun fell and Julian woke up, they went through the motions of dressing. Prometheus’s arms and legs were like lead. In the living room, Nemesis and Aidos were still watching television, the remote balanced on Aidos’s thigh. They both shifted and sat up when he and Julian came out.

“I’m going to see Hecate,” Prometheus announced.

“Okay. Now?” Nemesis asked. Already, she was halfway off the couch.

“You’re not coming.”

“Like hell you’re going to the underworld on your own without your powers,” Nemesis snapped.

“I won’t be alone. Julian is coming with me.”

Nemesis looked him over, her eyes narrowed like she was on the verge of saying something rude. Julian crossed his arms with the same unflinching challenge he’d faced down Mark Berger.

“Anyway,” Prometheus broke in before either of them had a chance to say anything regrettable. “I need you two to do something for me.”

“What, Father?” Aidos asked, slipping her arm around Nemesis’s middle.

“Go and tell Zeus I’d like to meet with him.”
